Democrat Mike Turner Backs Single-Payer Healthcare; Opponent Feder Undecided

PURCELLVILLE, Va., March 26 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- At a panel discussion in Purcellville, VA on March 20th, Retired Air Force Colonel Mike Turner, a candidate for U.S. Congress in Virginia's 10th District, squared off against a spokesperson for Professor Judy Feder, his opponent in the June 10th Democratic primary. The winner will oppose incumbent Frank Wolf in what is expected to be a hotly-contested general election. Turner presented specific ideas for ending the war in Iraq, resolving the economic and housing crises, and improving regional transportation; he then announced his support for single-payer national health insurance. The Feder spokesperson revealed that Feder was still "working on a healthcare proposal" and would be "rolling it out later."

Turner's campaign manager, Alan Letzt, surprised by the Feder campaign's admission that her position on health care has not been completed, said "For years, Judy Feder has touted her major role on Hillary Clinton's Task Force on National Health Care Reform although it is common knowledge that this ill- fated effort failed to build a consensus among Congress and the health care community. She had 15 years to rethink health care and either develop a new position or adopt one of the proposals being discussed by the Democratic Party. I am curious what is taking so long."

Turner echoed the claims of 88 Congressional co-sponsors of HR676, including Virginia Congressman Jim Moran, D.C. Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, and 15,000 members of "Physicians for a National Health Program," that single-payer health insurance will provide true universal coverage with equal or better quality and lower costs.

For the first time in 20 years, Democrats in the 10th district will have a choice; the primary is on Tuesday, June 10th.
